News from English..

We have been delighted with the quality of assessment tasks submitted over the past few weeks. Please see below a selection of poems composed by students in 9E1. All students submitted an image they chose as stimulus to assist with generating ideas and inspiration for their poems. Enjoy!

Everything still, silent

Cast in a deep, heavy black

Weary, drowsy, half awake

They cuddle back to back

Soft, distant chirping

Shadowed thickets thinning

Grudging fade of predators lurking

The rising fire winning

The brilliance of the sun awaking

First met by the craggy peaks

Slender serpents start their baking

While shadowed beasts now go to sleep

Crisp white powder starts to melt

Wispy clouds without a tether

Dense emerald pine, thicker than felt

Natures umbrella for any weather

Shadows lengthen, clutch and strengthen

Back to burrow, drowsy, tired

And streaking orange in the sky,

Bloody, brilliant rays of fire

‘Heavy Rain, Bitter Pain'

The droplets of water cascade around me,

Softly, gently, splashing

I don't know if the water on my face are my tears or ever-present rainfall.

My feet splash in puddles glazing the cobblestone streets with their reflective beauty

As water slithers into drains like snakes in the grass,

I usually find pleasure with this sight

The wind clawed and lunged desperately at my form,

Begging, screaming, pleading

The wind blew back the soft cloth cover of the form I was holding

I had to bite back my tears, but alas, to no avail.

Big brown eyes, soft and tired, and some soft black strands framing their head.

And much like before, I was filled with the outmost regret, guilt, pain.

But being with me would leave suffering,

I want this sunshine to last, to grow, to love

Leaving a soft peck, a whisper, a knock…I ran

Half of me believes I'm making a bad choice, but I have to believe I am not.

I am sorry…the word sounds so pointless now…

I hate the rain, it reminds me of what I gave up

And what I allowed myself to lose.

The sun fell asleep

As the moon awakened

His eyes became mesmerized

In the sea of infinite stars

Each one greeting him as they appeared

Breathtaking

Surreal

All were oblivious but he

Twinkling, trickling

What a sight to see

Dispersing

Like a plume of smoke

The stars gave him vibrant hope

As he looked once more

Into the dark azure sky

He felt free

He felt alive

........................................................................................................................................................

my little brother toby

left when he was four

grew some wings and a halo

and floated out the door

toby would be the kind of angel

you'd sing about in praise

painted in cathedrals

and surrounded by a golden haze

sometimes if I listen closely

I'll hear his soft voice hum

calling the names of his family

as he blesses us one by one

i imagined him living amongst the clouds

and every night he'd float down

to grace the dreams of good children

with his sweet smile and golden crown

they say a loved one never leaves you

that they'll stay forever in your heart

but I hope that toby's far away

in the land of clouds and stars
